An upgrade can leave an older install unable to boot
On older Omarchy installs, an upgrade can leave the machine unable to boot for about 10 seconds, until a fix that pins root= first. Pull request 6951 merged into quattro.
The gap is on installs that pre-date the ISO pinning root= in /etc/default/limine. A fresh 3.8.0 ISO install never dropped root=, even while the kernel was bumped.
limine-entry-tool reads root= from the running command line only while nothing is appended to KERNEL_CMDLINE. Installing omarchy-settings appends a defaults file and turns that fallback off. A kernel bump in the same transaction then builds a UKI whose command line has no root=.
Sampling during the upgrade found root= missing from the UKI for about 10 seconds, then repaired. Booting in that state stops at an emergency shell with “ERROR: Failed to mount '' on real root”.
The fix pins root= before the packages that can drop it. David Heinemeier Hansson opened and merged pull request 6951.
