Herdr server starts with the desktop session unless SSH connects first without autologin
A change merged into quattro starts the herdr server from the desktop session so panes inherit Wayland. An SSH-started server had left Claude Code unable to paste a screenshot. Without autologin, SSH before login can still start the server first.
When a remote herdr connects over SSH before the local client is opened, that SSH login starts the herdr server. The server then carries the SSH session's environment, with no Wayland display, and so does every pane it spawns. Agents in those panes cannot reach the Wayland clipboard, so pasting a screenshot in Claude Code silently finds no image.
herdr server starts from Hyprland's autostart, under uwsm-app. If a server is already running, herdr server exits and nothing changes. The pull request states the cost of an idle empty server as about 21 MB RSS (about 6 MB private) and effectively no CPU.
The pull request reports the timing from the machine where this was found: on an autologin boot, Hyprland starts well before a remote client can connect. Without autologin, an SSH login that happens before the user logs in can still start the server first. The pull request says stopping the server from the desktop and reopening herdr addresses that case.
