Tested userspace startup shortens in two boot changes
David Heinemeier Hansson reports a median userspace startup of 0.737 s with both boot changes in pull request 15182, against 2.413 s unchanged, on a virtual machine. Hansson said hardware measurements remain follow-up validation before adoption. The merges are not in version 4.0.4.
pull request 15175 pulls the binfmt mount into the boot so binary-format registration starts after the mount is ready. David Heinemeier Hansson reports that on the tested image, registration had been waiting almost a second, and that five alternating boots on the verified 2026.10.12.442 edge image put median userspace startup at 2.408 s before and 1.503 s after, and the registration service at 992 ms before and 13 ms after.
pull request 15182 raises the mount-monitor allowance from five notifications a second to thirty, because a boot burst was deferring new mount jobs. David Heinemeier Hansson reports that ten boots of each configuration on the same image put median userspace startup at 1.501 s with only the binfmt change. Hansson reports that every boot in those runs reached running, with no failed units, and that all 31 QEMU binary formats registered. Hansson said these are virtual-machine userspace measurements, not hardware or initrd claims.
Under a synthetic run of 1,000 mount and unmount operations, Hansson reports PID1 CPU use rising from 3.5% to 5.5% of one core with 31 existing mounts, and from roughly 5.3% to 15.5% with 1,031 mounts. The merged setting applies after boot as well. David Heinemeier Hansson opened and merged both pull requests into quattro. The pull request says hardware measurements remain follow-up validation before adoption.
