Image picking in the merged shell appears at once, without a dimmed backdrop
Pull request 14709 merges an image picker that appears in one frame over the desktop, with the transitions and the full-screen dim removed. A stalled preview still opens the picker. The merge is not in version 4.0.4.
The pull request says the picker waits until the visible previews have been decoded, then shows the whole frame at once. If a preview stalls, it opens anyway after 400 milliseconds instead of holding the keyboard on a picker the user cannot see. Before it is visible, only Escape is accepted, so a filter or Return cannot apply a selection that has not been shown.
David Heinemeier Hansson opened and merged the change. He wrote that recordings of a cold open and a warm open showed the picker going from absent to its final frame in one step, and that the desktop behind it was not dimmed.
